The final qualifying for tomorrow's Italian GP at Mugello was sunny and fine (with the odd bit of cloud - but certainly nothing like yesterday's rotten conditions) so times were a lot faster. And with the 250cc session they just kept tumbling, with Mika Kallio initially leading, then Alvaro Bautista and finally Hector Barbera.
Alhtough Barbera eventualy took his last-minute pole with a dominant 0.772 second advatnage over Bati, it's worth bearing in mind that Alvaro's final fast lap was spoiled by traffic - and he reckoned he was on a real flyer.
Let's hope that he has the pace and settings to take advantage of that tomorrow.

Here's the quote from Alvaro...
2nd Alvaro Bautista: 1.53.447 (20 laps):
"The result is good but I think that if it wasn't for traffic over the final few laps I could have improved my time. I'm satisfied because the rhythm is quite good and if the weather tomorrow is like it was this afternoon then I think we have the set-up to fight for a good result.
I aim for the best possible result in every race and if I can win tomorrow I'll obviously go for it. If not I'll just do my best. It's difficult to escape here because of the long straight, which makes slipstreaming so important, but we have a strong pace. I'll just try to get the best out of the set-up of my Aprilia and try to enjoy riding it!"

Good luck guy - go for it!
Vamos Bati! :)

Random Pic: Loving The Lid Bati :)

A glimpse of the new helmet Alvaro is wearing at Mugello this weekend... Wasn't in evidence yesterday.
But it's very very cool indeed and far nicer than his standard 2008 lid in my opinion ;)

Italian GP, Mugello - Friday

Interesting to note that in his Friday quotes from the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, Alvaro is swift to apologise for not speaking to the press after Le Mans; to be honest though, who could blame him - he must have been gutted. Anyway - a very sweet gesture to acknowledge this...

Álvaro Bautista: 5th - 2.07.876 (16 laps):
"First of all I want to apologise to the media and acknowledge that I was wrong not to speak with them after the Grand Prix in France. I was disappointed but that's no excuse. Here we've come to work as hard as ever - this morning it was going well and in the afternoon the feeling was good in the wet too. Towards the end of the session I opened the throttle too far and crashed by riding with too much confidence. Luckily I escaped without any serious injury and hopefully I get the chance to improve in dry conditions tomorrow because it looks like it will be a dry race."

Alvaro Bautista Looks Ahead To The Italian Grand Prix

Here’s a quote from Alvaro (filtered via me and Google!) looking ahead to the coming weekend’s Italian GP at Mugello...

“I am ready for Mugello, to see if we are able to work as well as we have been doing so far, but more importantly, to see if we can get a good result, with a happy outcome. Over the past two years I have come first and second in the Italian Grand Prix and I think that is a circuit I am good at. It’s a very fast circuit, with abrupt changes of direction, hard work but fun.
My goal is to work the Aprilia hard over the weekend, and be ready for race day with the best options possible.”

Best of luck Alvaro :)
Enjoy the bike, enjoy the circuit and let’s see you break that bad luck spell again!
Go Bati :)

Post-race Quote From Alvaro

"I prefer to think about the fact that our pace was good all weekend, and that our team are competitive. The race didn't go how we wanted, and we are obviously having some bad luck this year.
The start wasn't good for me, and I stalled on the first corner, so I started to ride more carefully so as not to make any mistakes. I was suddenly far down the field and it was too late for a comeback when the conditions changed."

A Bad Day For Alvaro: 14th!!!

Well, it was a monumentally depressing race for us Bati fans today, as Alvaro was swallowed up off the start line (from his 2nd place grid position) to wind up spending most of the race way down in the teens (17th at one point!), eventually crossing the line in 14th place to take a meagre 2 points - these leave him 8th in the overall Championship standings on 41.
Sadly now there's quite a gulf between him and the riders at the top of the table... Not the way the season was meant to be going :(

Ah well, nothing more can be done about today so we need to look ahead to Mugello, scene of Bati's awesome maiden 250cc win last year. Perhaps he can get things turned around there...
Go Bati!

Here, for the record, are the results...

Alvaro - Friday Quotes...

1st Álvaro Bautista:
1.38.479 (22 laps):
"We were fast from the start of the session with a full fuel tank and did a great job throughout. At the end on new tyres the other riders improved and we had to fight hard to the end to make sure of provisional pole. It was my best ever lap at this track - last year I did a 38.8 but I managed a 38.4 today. My feeling with the bike is good, everything is under control and I'm happy. I've never been on the podium at this track so lets see if, after such a strange start to the season, Le Mans can be the place that the luck returns for good. I'm really fast in T4 so I'm looking to the other sections to make up time."

French GP: Quali 1, 250cc - Alvaro Takes Provisional Pole

Okay it's abuject to Qualy 2 tomorrow, but if the ugly rumours of rain turn out to be true then there's a decent chance Alvaro will retain the pole he provisionally took this afternoon...

Alvaro Receives "Premio Gredos" Award

If you want to know more about this award (Bati's going to be needing some pretty long shelves for all his trophies and awards soon!) and everything our guy is up to at the moment, click here...

Quote from Alvaro; post Chinese GP

A typically balanced view from Alvaro, keeping things in perspective and looking to put disappointment behind him...

"This wasn’t what we were expecting from this race. We dominated the practice sessions and were the stronger team over the weekend. This morning in the wet warmup I was comfortable, and in the race I put myself in the lead, but the wet is a lottery and this time it was my turn to lose out I suppose. It’s a pity, because I was sure that we could have done well, it was just a case of losing the front and being unable to avoid the crash. I was able to get four points. My team and Aprilia are doing a great job, and I feel strong on the bike. I just have to hope that we are a bit luckier in the future."

Lap 9 Fall Costs Alvaro Dear...

Well, not a good race :(
Although Alvaro got a bit swallowed up off the start, he soon got back into the lead in the drying - but still partially wet and greasy conditions - and was looking pretty fine until on lap 9 he fell at the first corner.
Thankfully a long slide left him in good enough shape to get back on the bike and continue the race (down in 13th).
The bike looked pretty compromised but he never gave up and came home an eventual 12th.
Still, with Mika Kallio taking what was then a pretty easy win and pocketing a fat load of points, it was a pretty grim day and leaves Bait waaaaaaaaay down on points as the season carries on.
Bah! Too down to do any more than cut and paste the results now...

Alvaro Bautista: Post-Qualifying Quote, China

Here's Bati sounding deservedly please post-quali and looking ahead to tomorrow's race...

"I think that we have a good pace and things are pretty clear for the race. Today’s result has boosted my morale, and even if it rains then I feel strong and I’m going to have fun with the bike. The track conditions were worse than yesterday, with more heat and humidity, so I am very happy even though we could have gone faster. I wasn’t able to pick up the pace with so many people waiting for a draft. If the race is dry then we have the pace, so my intention will be to go at 100% and ride on my own, as it is in the wet."

I'm still hoping for NO rain, but we'll see what happens...

Chinese GP: 250cc Final Qualifying - Alvaro On Pole

Bit of a boring session for the most part, but of course the good news is that Alvaro maintains the pole position he provisionally took yesterday; only bettering that time in the closing minutes of the session.
Tomorrow may yet be a lottery however, with rumours of torrential rain.
Let's hope it holds off and Alvaro gets the chance to use his pace, unhindered, to completely take charge...

Good luck Bati! :)
